On... The status of my life

for my millions of readers

Work
I have a job, pending visa etc. Not going into too many details here - at least partly because my new manager is aware of this blog - but it's decent work with decent people at a decent company for decent pay. It's not quite what I'd design as my perfect job, but it's certainly not a stopgap, and it means the whole "leaving Hong Kong due to lack of work and money" problem is off the table for now.

Accommodation
I moved out of 112 Apartments about 6 weeks ago and into a friends's spare room. It's much cheaper for me, and covers the rent for her after her former flatmate moved out, and it's nice for me firstly to have some company at home and to be living in a real flat with a living room, rather than the studios I've been in for the past couple of years. And it's on the 4th floor, which is considered an unlucky number to the Chinese - so from the 13th to the 4th...

Love
Nothing. Nada. Zip. I've been asked a couple of times recently about my Chinese girlfriend - I don't have a Chinese girlfriend and never did. I had something with a sweet, cute local girl, but things didn't go as far as being a couple. Things could have gone that far, and it was purely her decision which stopped it, but in the end we were too different from each other, and looking for too different things from our lives. We are still in touch, and still friendly, which I'm glad about, but I'm sorry that things went the way they did. I do have lots of female friends - but pretty much all of the "just friends" type, or at least "undecided". I would like to have something more than that in my life, and I do miss what I had for a short time earlier this year, but it'll come, sooner or later. I think...

Health
Health things are good but not great. I've somewhat lost my gym routine after moving across town and starting working, but I have lost a little weight over the past few weeks, more from having a more structured daily routine, fixed meal times, etc. I had a pre-employment medical yesterday, and I don't have the results, but things do seem to have slightly improved in the past few months. If things keep up the way they are - slow but steady weight loss, and slow but steady progress in other areas - I'll be happy. The worrying thing is that I'm not sure how steady it is at the moment - I need to focus on it a bit more. One thing I have been doing is cutting down on my drinking - HK is very much a party town, as I've said before, and it's usual for me to be out at least 3 or 4 nights a week at somewhere where there is drinking going on, and it's far too easy to fall into a pattern of having 3 or 4 drinks, 3 or 4 nights a week, which isn't terribly unhealthy, but certainly isn't healthy, and isn't going to contribute positively to a weight loss and health improvement programme. I stopped almost 100% for a month or two, and now I'm drinking lightly, trying to keep it to a couple at the weekend. It's not the easiest thing, purely from a peer pressure point of view, but it does lead to interesting situations where you're the only person who actually remembers the night before!

Misc
Amongst other things, in the past couple of months, I've organised a paintballing trip for 27 people, I've been to the cinema a couple of times, I went ice-skating for the first time in about 15 years and managed, after an hour or so of trying, to get all the way around the rink twice without stopping - and I didn't fall over once! I've met fun and interesting new people, as one does in Hong Kong, I've spent a lot of time socialising, and some time by myself, I've bought a Wii, and hopefully, with the new job, the new living arrangements, and the lack of a (specific) girl messing up my head I can get my life onto a more even keel than it has been for the past 8-12 months, We'll see - things change fast in this town.
